Despite our commonsense definition of what it is to be conscious, and announcements of a physicalist consensus, the philosophy and science of consciousness is a melee of disagreement. Is this owed to the absence of an initial clarification of the subject? Is there a rough necessary and sufficient condition of consciousness in the primary ordinary sense to be found in five leading ideas in the philosophy and science?
